Pierre Garcon signs with Redskins, announces it on Twitter

Forget the deadlines on breaking news in the NFL anymore -- with athletes tweeting out their departures and arrivals (as Eric Winston did on Monday, to tell the world that the Houston Texans were going to release him), it's a zero-deadline world these days. So it was when former Indianapolis Colts receiver Pierre Garcon agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins. And despite what you may have heard about Washington's current NFL-enforced salary cap issues, they're bringing Garcon in with quite the haul: $42.5 million over five years with $21.5 million guaranteed, according to several sources.

Here's what Garcon tweeted about the deal:

I wanted you all to hear it from me 1st before u saw it on the news... I will be signing with the Washington Redskins and I'm very excited about the opportunity in front of me.

I want to thank all Colts fans from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you've shown me the past 4 years and I hope that at some level u will still follow my career, as I will continue to share my life with you on here...

Selected in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft out of Mount Union college, Garcon racked up 188 catches, 2,519 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Colts. His breakout season came in 2010, Peyton Manning's last year as an actual Colts player, when he caught 67 passes for 784 yards and six touchdowns. He was even more valuable to the team in the post-Manning fallout of 2011, catching 70 balls for 947 yards and six touchdowns on a passing offense that could be kindly described as "undynamic."

"It's a great signing by the Redskins," former Colts general manager Bill Polian, now an ESPN analyst, said on NFL Live Tuesday afternoon. Polian, of course, was the one who pulled the trigger on Garcon in the first place. "He's got great size, great speed. Played at Division III Mount Union College, just now coming into his own in the NFL. He's got world-class speed. In the West Coast offense, where they look for guys who can catch the ball across the middle and run with it after the catch, Pierre Garcon is a perfect fit."

Reports also indicate that the Redskins are close to signing former San Francisco 49ers speed receiver Josh Morgan, and it seems that former Broncos receiver Eddie Royal is very much in the mix. It appears that when Robert Griffin III hits the nation's capital, he'll have at least two new targets.
