Free agency never sleeps? That's right, as evidenced by the number of player signings that happened after dinnertime and long into the night...
-- The San Francisco 49ers made a big splash with cornerback Carlos Rogers, who they got on a one-year contract in 2011, only to see him have a career year with one of the NFL's best defenses. On Tuesday night, Rogers re-upped with a four-year, $29.3 million deal with another $4 million available in incentives. He picked off six passes last season, after amassing just eight interceptions in six previous seasons with the Washington Redskins. We're thinking the contact lenses, which he didn't wear in Washington, helped. A scary thought for opposing offenses -- the 49ers will return all 11 defensive starters to a team that ranked third overall in Football Outsiders' opponent-adjusted rankings.
-- No Vincent Jackson, no problem? That's what the San Diego Chargers apparently believe. After losing their franchise receiver to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Chargers signed former New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem to a four-year, $25.9 million deal with $14 million guaranteed. Meachem had visited Buffalo, but apparently found A.J. Smith's overtures more appealing. The move will give Meachem the opportunity to be a No. 1 receiver for the first time in his career, and he seems to have the talent to make that happen. The vertical threat was one of the 10 most efficient receivers last year on a per-play basis. In his career, Meachem has never had a single-season catch rate lower than 67 percent, and he has a career yards-per-catch average of 16.1.
-- The St. Louis Rams will give former Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan a $50 million contract that included $26.5 million in guarantees, reuniting him with Jeff Fisher. it's a good move, especially for a young defense that may be changing defensive coordinators (the soon-to-be suspended Gregg Williams) against its will sooner than later. �At least half a dozen teams were giving Finnegan a good look in free agency, and though he's not an interception machine, his tough and physical playing style will help to establish the defensive culture Fisher had in Tennessee, and he hopes to put forth in St. Louis.
-- Reggie Wayne and the Indianapolis Colts? That's an unexpected reunion, especially after Wayne was quoted as saying that he wanted to go wherever Peyton Manning went. When we talked with Wayne during Super Bowl week, he hadn't heard from Jim Irsay at all about his future plans, and he wasn't very happy about that. It sounded very much like the veteran was heading out of town, but he'll stay in Indy and become Andrew Luck's new best buddy after agreeing to a three-year, $17 million deal that includes $7 million in guarantees. Not the worst way to go, really...
