The Rock curses three times on SportsCenter (video)
The Rock was cooking up some PG-13 language during a live "SportsCenter" appearance on Thursday morning. The football player turned wrestler turned actor was in Bristol to promote his new, PG-rated movie, "Journey 2" and dropped three light profanities during the spot.
It was an especially strange interview since each curse had all the spontaneity of a Chris Berman catchphrase. Normally when someone lets one slip on live television, it's an accident (Ron Jarowski) or in a moment of surprise (Lee Corso). The Rock was speaking like a third grader who's trying to see what he could get away with.
In this clip, he says "bull----" at the 38-second mark:
Don't play coy, The Rock. You know you were live.

Matt Forte?s #twitterrant puts him on the wrong side of the equation
Since he came into the NFL in 2008, Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte has been one of the NFL's most productive and versatile players. Not only has he rushed for 4,233 yards and 21 touchdowns on 1,014 carries, he's also caught 223 passes for 1,985 yards and eight touchdowns in an offense that has often asked him to be the Bears' most reliable (and sometime only legitimate) receiver.
However, Forte and the Bears have been playing contract footsie for quite some time, and the team's Thursday signing of former Oakland Raiders power back Michael Bush to a four-year, apparently didn't help the situation. In lieu of a long-term deal with Forte, the Bears slapped the franchise tag on him, guaranteeing the Tulane alum $7.74 million in the 2012 season. But between Bush's new deal -- which could net up to $14 million -- and the franchise designation -- Forte feels very out of place. After the Bush deal was made public, Forte turned to his Twitter account to make his feelings known.
There's only so many times a man that has done everything he's been asked to do can be disrespected! Guess the GOOD GUYS do finish last...
for the record I'm not mad at the signing of another running back. This is 4th time that's happened. I embrace competition as well as help
But as for not taking care of ur own and undervaluing a player under his market value is another story! #twitterrant"
"I can understand where the guy's coming from," Bush said. "Everything they've asked for, he's done. It's one of those things where you want to be rewarded for your success. I understand, but that has nothing to do with me. It'll be great working with him."
The Bears had tried to come to terms with Forte before placing the franchise designation on him. Former general manager Jerry Angelo had offered Forte a contract that would have guaranteed him anywhere from $13 million to $14 million. After those offers were rejected, Arian Foster of the Houston Texans and Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks signed contracts with guaranteed money -- Lynch got $18 million guaranteed, and Foster received $20.75 million. New Bears GM Phil Emery and longtime head coach Lovie Smith have each said that the team is very interested in signing Forte to a long-term deal, but obviously, the value discussions keep going off-kilter.
"Matt is going to play his football for the Chicago Bears, you start with that," Smith said at the NFL scouting combine. "In time, hopefully, we can get an agreement in place that suits Matt, and we feel comfortable with. I think it's just a matter of time. That will happen eventually."
"Since drafting Matt in 2008, the Bears have signed Kevin Jones, Chester Taylor and Marion Barber, all ostensibly to serve as Matt's backup," agent Adisa Bakari said in a statement. "To sign yet another running back, prior to completing a deal with Matt, suggests disregard for Matt and his contribution to the Bears."
[ Also: Tim Tebow's presence may inspire Jets QB Mark Sanchez ]
It's clear that Forte has earned a long-term deal -- most likely somewhere between Lynch's and Foster's in terms of value. But unless the Bears are clearly low-balling him, Forte's timing is rather curious. The entire structure of Bush's contract wouldn't likely exceed the guaranteed money Forte would get, and the fact that he missed four games in the 2011 season (the first missed games of his NFL career) indicates that the team needs a reliable option should Forte get hurt again. In addition, with more and more teams going to running back rotations as opposed to driving one bell-cow back into the ground, those types of big-money, long-term deals for backs are very rare. Unless you're Adrian Peterson, you're not going to crack the sky with your guaranteed dollars, and Forte should understand that.
In addition, it's probably not good form to go public with your feelings of disgruntlement (however legitimate they may be) with a new GM and a coach who is well known for keeping things quiet. At a time when the Bears can still sign him to a long-term contract, Forte may have been better served to follow that example.

Limiting Tebow to Wildcat options is a shortchange for both sides
Setting the ancillary aspects of Tim Tebow in New York aside, there are a great many people wondering exactly how a quarterback rotation featuring Mark Sanche as the starter and Tebow as a specialized "Wildcat" backup will work. What we do know is that in their Week 13 34-19 win over the Washington Redskins, Rex Ryan was the one who went to the coaches and asked for more Wildcat.
"I think it's tough to defend if you're not really focused on it," Ryan said the day after the game. "Sometimes it's tough to defend. We thought this is a good football team [Redskins]. They're really good against the run. So we thought we could challenge them by putting in some of those things? That was my feeling on it. When Schotty [former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] and I talked about, he said, 'That sounds like a great idea. Let's go for it.'"
On the Wednesday night conference call announcing the trade, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said this: "I think what we've become is a diverse, more dynamic offense that's going to make it more difficult for opposing teams to defend. We have a vision for the player, we have a role for the player."
The Jets ran seven Wildcat plays for 26 yards and a touchdown against the Redskins, and that appeared to be the seed for the Tebow trade. So, before we discuss how Tebow could work in the Wildcat after a history as an option quarterback (yes, the Wildcat and the basic option are different things, despite what you hear on TV all the time), let's break down what the Wildcat is, and why other option concepts have actually supplanted as the preferred strategy -- including the option strategies that worked for the Broncos against the Jets.
When theMiami Dolphinslooked to change their offensive structure in 2008 after a Week 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, they unwittingly opened the door for different formations, ideas, and players in the NFL. Head coach Tony Sparano (now the Jets' offensive coordinator) and quarterbacks coach David Lee (now the Buffalo Bills' quarterbacks coach) started talking about something Lee had run with running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones as Arkansas' offensive coordinator in 2007, and the "Wild Hog" made its debut against the New England Patriots the following week. The subsequent 38-13 win turned the 'Hog into the 'Cat, got the Dolphins going on their improbable division championship run, and inspired a spawn of imitators.
The Wildcat is basically a derivation of the old single-wing, and the player receiving the ball from center in a shotgun set has multiple options. As Lee explained it on CSTV in 2007 (and asI detailed for Football Outsiders after the Miami win over New England), there are three primary plays:
"Steeler," in which the running back moves from left to right after the snap and takes the ball from the quarterback. The running back then blasts off to the right behind a pulling left guard, an unbalanced right offensive line, and an H-back either between and behind the two right tackles or just outside the right tackle to block. One Steeler option is a handoff to quarterback Chad Pennington from wide right -- the Fins completely fooled the Texans with this one in 2008 -- when Pennington threw to halfback Patrick Cobbs from the slot, there was no Houston defender within 10 yards of him.
"Power," in which the fake to the running back in the "Steeler" formation leaves the quarterback to (hopefully) blow through any one of four different holes to the right. The H-back will stay in to block, and the pulling guard is the key. Left guard Justin Smiley was money for the Dolphins on this play until a leg injury ended his season early (the red arrows indicate secondary options for the back; dashed arrows indicate fakes or players running dummy routes).
"Counter" (70 Weak), in which the running back fake leaves the defense biting on "Power," only to watch helplessly as the back runs left through a huge open cutback lane. The line uses slide protection instead of a pulling guard. There's a passing option out of the Counter, as Miami running back Ronnie Brown showed against the Pats when he hit tight end Tony Fasano for a touchdown.
In 2008, the Dolphins ran a total of 965 plays for 5,529 yards, a 5.7 yards-per-play average and 38 offensive (rushing and passing) touchdowns. Of those plays, 91 were run out of the Wildcat formation -- the actual Wildcat, not a read-option or shotgun draw misclassified as such -- for 580 yards, a 6.7 yards-per-play average and eight touchdowns. It didn't work all the time (it REALLY didn't work against the Baltimore Ravens' malevolent defense), but imitators sprouted up everywhere. The Falcons started running "Dirty Bird" formations with direct snaps to running back Jerious Norwood, and the Browns found success with their "flash" packages, using receiver/return maven Josh Cribbs, a former quarterback at Kent State, as the main man.
But over time, and especially by the time Tebow and Cam Newton hit the NFL in 2011, the trend had moved away from what is classified as "Wildcat" to more speed- and read-option plays. The option game in the NFL now more closely resembles an advanced version of what Michael Vick was doing with the Atlanta Falcons from 2004 through 2006, and it's Newton who might be able to weld the game Vick played then with the pocket presence Vick has now.
For all the easy and obvious comparisons to other strictly mobile quarterbacks who threatened defenses with their legs and couldn't do much with their arms, Newton was digesting chapters of the Panthers' playbook at an accelerated rate through the 2011 season. And Tebow, for all his roll-right stuff, didn't have one play last year that Football Outsiders' game charting would classify as a Wildcat play.
Most of what Tebow did in 2011 was a series of simple run-reads in which the imperative was to get the first-read receiver open, and cut Tebow loose as a runner if not. The overtime touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in Denver's wild-card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers was a good example of Tebow's nebulous ability to process multiple reads on the run. In the Broncos' 17-13 Week 11 win over the Jets -- the game Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum referred to when speaking of Tebow as an ideal Wildcat quarterback -- the Broncos ran all kinds of traditional andspread plays, with far more diversity than the Steeler/Power/Counter package.
On the first play of the game, Tebow hit Thomas for a 28-yard gain from an empty-backfield formation in which four receivers were lined up on the right side. That's less Wildcat, and more the wide-open spread stuff you'd see at Texas Tech under Mike Leach, or what Blaine Gabbert ran at Missouri. And of the 20-yard fourth-quarter Tebow touchdown run that was the game was a designed shotgun run play, Tebow certainly faked the pass well -- he took the ball in a single-back set, clearly looked downfield, and decided to run to his left after the Jets' run containment completely broke down. The Jets were playing Cover-0 (man coverage with no deep safety), but they played pass on Denver's three receivers, and they didn't play straight run up the middle -- they sent two defenders on a dual A-gap blitz.
So, the question remains -- what exactly did the Jets acquire Tebow to do? Is this Wildcat talk just a tactic to hold the line until Tebow becomes the starter, or do the Jets really see Tebow as a way back to the future? While Tebow doesn't resemble anyone's version of an ideal traditional quarterback, tying him to a series of wildcat schemes limits his options at a time when his talents have exceeded those limitations. If you want the full Tebow package ... well, you have to do what the Broncos did so well last season. Make him the starter, meet him halfway schematically, and see how far you go. Marginalizing Tebow at the Brad Smith level and basically making him the playbook version of a circus freak does the player no good after how he developed in 2011, and it does the player's team no good because the NFL has already sorted that strategy out to a large degree.
The Jets have to go full-bore with Tebow. They can't sit on the fence and expect this to work.

Mark Rypien, 14 other former Redskins added to enormous list of concussion plaintiffs
The NFL may be worried about bounties and salary cap penalties right now, but when those stories die down and the long offseason eventually begins, the bit story on everybody's plate will undoubtedly be the rapidly growing numbers of former NFL players who have banded together to file several lawsuits against the league, claiming that in their days, the NFL knew about the effects of concussions and did little to protect them.
The latest group, with former Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien as its lead plaintiff, adds 126 plaintiffs to a group that already had 854 ex-players in several different lawsuits filed from August of 2011 through early March. According to nflconcussionlitigation.com, as many as 51 different suits have been filed in several different states, including five wrongful death lawsuits.
[Related: VIDEO: Mark Rypien's daughter, Angela, now Lingerie League QB]
According to the suit led by Rypien, the ex-quarterback now "suffers from various neurological conditions and symptoms related to the multiple head traumas." Rypien was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXVI, when the Redskins beat the Buffalo Bills, 37-24. He played from 1998 through 2001 and finished his career with 1,466 completions in 2,613 attempts for 18,473 yards, 115 touchdowns, and 88 interceptions.
Two notable high draft picks from the 1990s, quarterback Todd Marinovich (24th overall in 1991) and offensive lineman Tony Mandarich (second overall in 1989), are also named in Rypien's suit.
"Often times a class action lawsuit is about a money grab. and that's not what this is about," Mandarich told Jim Weber of LostLettermen.com. "If (the NFL) didn't know that there were greater risks, then I wouldn't be part of [the lawsuit]."
The legal actions come from all over, but the premise is generally the same -- long before the NFL made concussion awareness a public issue, the league had a real knowledge of the long-term effects of head trauma and kept the information under wraps.
[Related: Gallery: Pro Combat helmet designs go viral on internet]
"My main objective is, if they knew about it, they should have been disclosed to us," Mandarich said. "It would have probably prompted more action like [there is] today in the NFL."
Mandarich estimated that he suffered six or seven concussions during his six-year career, and as a result, he's become yet another cautionary tale in the battle to further concussion awareness.
"I don't want to say recently, but for years I have taken medication for [depression]," Mandarich told Weber. Mandarich also said he also suffers from short-term memory loss and affected speech.
"Since the workers' compensation laws in each state are different, the National Football League Players Association has designated workers' compensation panel attorneys in each city with an NFL team," Attorney Bryan E. Round, the NFLPA's designated compensation attorney, told nflconcussionlitigation.com on March 16. "The players on the team in that town are not obligated to use that attorney, however ... the panel attorney has a national network of attorneys to consult with and has significant experience in handling these claims."
[Related: NFL Draft's 50 biggest busts: Where are they now?]
So, with an attorney network set up to establish these suits, Mr. Round moved on to specify the issue at the heart of these suits.
"As a general proposition concerning the issue of concussions, the player's diagnosis, treatment and long-term effects are just coming to the fore in the National Football League. As such, most players have not been provided with a very strong working knowledge of concussions and how they should be treated. There is certainly a lack of scientific data addressing the long-term effects of those who have suffered concussions during their playing career which is an important aspect of the remedy sought in the concussion-related lawsuits."
But the scientific data is rounding into shape, and the sheer number of lawsuits in place should put a pretty decent-sized scare into the NFL. All it takes is one class-action precedent for the dominoes to start falling in the favor of retired players, who have long been the league's most under-represented majority.
"There's been a resistance on behalf of the NFL to embrace a number of medical studies over the last few years," NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said in 2009. "It is the primary reason we formed our own traumatic brain injury committee.
"We don't have to rely on the people who employ our players to do everything."

Texans give up on DeMeco Ryans; ship him to Philly
The linebacker-needy Philadelphia Eagles just picked up a 27-year-old former All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker for a fourth-round pick. I hope the Texans also got a bouquet of flowersout of the deal.
DeMeco Ryans, who had fallen out of favor in Houston (with coaches, but certainly not with teammates ? more on that in a minute), will now be anchoring the middle of the Eagles defense.
The Texans were willing to let him go for a song because they really didn't have a place for him anymore. Ryans missed most of 2010 with an Achilles injury, and saw his playing time drop dramatically in 2011 as the Texans switched to a 3-4 defense. The Eagles will put him back in the middle of a 4-3.
Ryans was a captain and a respected teammate in Houston, and no one on the Texans defense seems particularly happy with the move. Jerome Solomon, who covers the Texans for the Houston Chronicle, shared these texts he got from current or former Texans teammates:
"Damn, man, and they talk about loyalty."
"Cold-blooded, man, cold-blooded. But Meco will be better off for it. He's going to dominate in Philly."
"They don't what leadership means, do they? Bet they won't finish No. 2 in defense next season."
Texans defensive end Antonio Smith said this on Sirius XM NFL Radio:
"It's a big surprise to me. I don't know what is going on at this moment but DeMeco is a great player, a leader. He's going to be an asset to each and every team he plays for. ? Our defense is going to miss him. That's all I can say about it. I'm not in agreeance with it."
There are times when a guy means more to a unit than his stats represent. This would not be the first time in sports history a team underestimated the value of a player's leadership and ended up paying dearly for it. But at the same time, with what the Wade Phillips and the Texans were able to accomplish with their defense last year, they've earned the benefit of the doubt. Darryl Sharpton, a third-year player, will step into his spot, after making 12 tackles in eight games last year.
Texans general manager Rick Smith released this statement on the decision to trade Ryans:
"DeMeco Ryans contributed significantly toward helping us build the foundation we hope will bring a world championship to the city of Houston. His professionalism and leadership cannot be over-exaggerated. This move was mutually beneficial for the Texans immediate and long-term goals, DeMeco's career, and the Philadelphia Eagles. We appreciate all the hard work and effort DeMeco invested in our organization and wish him only the best moving forward. He is a class act."
And here's Eagles head coach Andy Reid, barely able to contain his glee:
"DeMeco is a proven Pro Bowl linebacker in this league and we're excited to be able to plug him into the middle of our defense," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's been the signal caller and a leader on a very good Texans defense for the last several years. He's a tough, instinctive football player and he'll be a great fit for our team."

Chad Ochocinco slashes pay to remain on New England Patriots
The market for aging, formerly disruptive receivers isn't what it once was. While Terrell Owens toils in the Indoor Football League, Chad Ochocinco is taking a $2 millionpay cut to remain on the New England Patriots.
ESPN reported Monday that Ochocino will restructure his contract for 2012. By "restructuring" they mean "taking a pay cut instead of releasing him."
Ochocinco will make $1 million for the upcoming season instead of the $3 million he was set to be owed. The lower cap number makes it more likely the 34-year-old receiver will make a talented Pats roster.
He was traded to New England last offseason for a multitude of low-round picks, earning $6 million in salary and bonuses for a disappointing year in which he posted career lows in receptions, yards, touchdowns and attention-grabbing headlines. Ochocinco started just three games for the Pats, the fewest since his rookie season with the Cincinnati Bengals.
This is a solid move for both sides. New England keeps a low-risk talent on its roster and Ochocinco has a chance to resurrect his career with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. It's a victory for all, especially bloggers who will get to cover Ochocinco fawning over Brady in training camp again.

Who?s the most successful Sports Illustrated swimsuit model?
Kate Upton is the biggest thing going in modeling. With her appearance on the cover of this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, countless television appearances and a burgeoning acting career, the 19-year-old supermodel seems destined for superstardom. Yet she still has a long way to go if she's to become the most successful SI cover model in recent history.
A list compiled by guyism.com ranks the seven most successful SI swimsuit models of the past 30 years. "Project Runway" host Heidi Klum is No. 4 with a net worth of $70 million, 1980s favorite Christie Brinkley lands at No. 3, Tyra Banks and her $90 million come in at No. 2, all well behind Kathy Ireland, the three-time cover model who has an estimated net worth of $150 million.
The same week Upton graced her first SI cover, Ireland was the subject of a cover profile in a different sort of periodical. She landed on the front of this week's issue of Forbes as part of a profile of her lucrative company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide.
In 1993, Ireland was approached by a marketer who wanted to put her name on a line of apparel. She agreed and took out a $50,000 loan later that year to begin the company. It's now turned into a home furnishing empire that sells over $2 billion worth of products per year.
Once known for its fashion line at Kmart, Kathy Ireland Worldwide now turns out kitchen candles, sofas, window dressings, jewelry, knives, chairs and countless other products for the home. Ireland has input on designs and direction but "happily delegates" the business aspects to a trusted team.
Ireland has her own advice for how Upton can succeed beyond the camera. "Don't let anyone put you in a box," she advises.

March Meh-ness: Kentucky?s muted initial reaction to Final Four berth
There was one notable similarity between Kentucky's first win of the season back on Nov. 11 over Marist and the Wildcats' resounding 82-70 victory over Baylor on Sunday in Atlanta, which sent them back to the Final Four.
It was the celebration. Or, rather, the lack of immediate jubilation.
After pushing Baylor aside with a commanding performance, Kentucky bucked the trend of teams erupting into hugs and fist pumps as the final buzzer sounded.
Instead, the most lasting image in the game's immediate aftermath? Reserve freshman wing Kyle Wiltjer gingerly walking towards his teammates approaching the handshake line with a thunderous ? golf clap.
Sure, they ultimately rejoiced, wore the hats and T-shirts and cut down the nets, but they acted like a team with bigger achievements on its mind.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, though.
For one, a Final Four trip felt like a birthright for Kentucky this season. Easily the nation's most talented, complete team, the Wildcats have played up to that billing at every point so far in the NCAA tournament.
Also, the game didn't have much drama, so that kind of an ending was sort of expected.
The Wildcats' offense was balanced, they led by 20 at the break, Baylor never seriously threatened again, and on top of it, Kentucky hit a whopping 30 (!!!) free throws.
It was dominating in every way, and Kentucky acted just like it afterwards.
It's that showing of maturity that will keep the Wildcats as the odds-on favorites moving on to New Orleans for the season's final weekend and its biggest stage.
