Less than a month before the Olympics, wrestler Stephany Lee has been suspended for testing positive for a marijuana metabolite after the Olympic Trials. Ali Bernard, who took second to Lee at the Trials and placed fifth at the Olympics in 2008, is expected to replace her.
According to USA Wrestling, Lee accepted a one-year ban from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which tested Lee after she made the team in Iowa City in April. The suspension knocked her out of representing the U.S. at 72 kg (158.5 lbs.)
Though it gives Bernard a second chance to represent the U.S., it's a pretty dumb move for Lee. Athletes from every sport know they will be tested during their trials and that marijuana is a banned substance.
Lee has been wrestling she was a high schooler in Hawaii, and a part of the U.S. national team since 2003. She finally realized her dream of becoming an Olympian, and now it's gone.
