Michael Vick, Pacman Jones pay it forward at NFL?s Rookie Symposium

Quarterback Michael Vick and cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones were highly touted draft prospects, and both players were taken early in the first rounds of their respective drafts -- Vick first overall out of Virginia Tech in 2001, and Jones sixth overall out of West Virginia in 2005. Each man started out hot in the NFL before running into serious legal trouble. Vick, of course, served almost two years in a federal penitentiary for his role in the Bad Newz Kennels dog-fighting ring. Jones was recently found liable to the tune of $11 million for his role in a Las Vegas strip club shooting in 2007.

Vick has seen a measure of personal and professional redemption since, while Jones is still looking to establish a foothold in the NFL to a serious degree. Both men served long NFL suspensions, and their names are each synonymous with a side of the NFL that the league would prefer didn't exist. However, each man spoke at this year's Rookie Symposium, an annual orientation for first-year players.

From Vick and Jones, the message was simple: Don't do as I did.

"I'm a firm believer in God, and I believe in karma," Vick said during his speech. "If you do so much, if you cross so many people, if you don't appreciate what God gave you and the position that you're in, he'll take that away from you. And he took it away from me.

"As I sat in a prison cell, I understood why I was in there. That's bad. You don't want to end up that way. True story: I could see it all coming. I could see it happening. I thought about it. I asked myself, 'Should I stop doing what I was doing?' And I didn't stop. That's having no discipline."

Vick was especially pointed on two subjects -- personal associations and money management.

[Related: Great Starts: 2011?s best third-day draft picks]

"The best thing for me to do was going to prison, being able to separate myself," he said of his former entourage, which included key members of the dog-fighting ring. "I wasn't strong enough to get away from them. I wasn't strong enough to say, 'We're not going this direction. I ain't living like this no more. We can't condone this type of activity.' I wasn't strong enough. I needed the legal system to say, 'You all can't be around each other anymore.' That's the situation I created."

Vick then moved to the matter of financial responsibility. Though he's the only person in the history of the NFL to sign two different contracts worth more than $100 million on the high side, Vick has experienced serious money trouble along the way. "Trust yourself," he said. "Everyone in here can count, right? Raise your hand if you can count. Shoot, I can count. Count your own money. You make it. You don't need an accountant and all that -- that dog and pony show. That's just extra. An extra invoice that you're going to get.

"Get a couple people you're going to trust -- that you're going to get to know. There are people out there that you can trust. My situation? I had a couple of judgments against me. People who were holding my money while I was in prison weren't paying my debts. And I had money to pay it."

For Jones, the messages to send were about regretted choices and missed opportunities. When he was done, Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner waited to speak with Jones one-on-one. "He was going through something that I was going through, so I asked him personally what he did so I can try to apply it to my life," Wagner said. "It helps knowing that somebody went through what you went through. You can take what you need from it and apply it to your life ... A lot of players in here are going through some of the same things, whether it's baby mamas or trying to pick a financial adviser to an issue with an agent. We can learn from this. We can learn from him."

It's normal for rookies to feel 10-feet tall and bulletproof, but the Rookie Symposium endeavors to turn that around into truth. As Vick emphasized, fame is all too fleeting.

"Once this is over, it's over," Vick said at the end of his speech. "I've seen a lot of dudes come and go. I'm blessed God gave me the talent to still be here. But don't take this for granted. I could be gone tomorrow. You've got one hell of an opportunity.

"Enjoy the ride. Congratulations."

And beware.

Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn are sniping at each other

Perhaps only Tim Tebow, the man for whom everything is magnified by a billion, could be the genesis of a media fight between two backup quarterbacks. Tebow, clipboard holder for the great Mark Sanchez, and Brady Quinn, clipboard holder for the great Matt Cassel, are swinging their clipboards at one another.

Quinn struck first, as you might recall this quote from a February GQ piece by the great Mike Silver.

"If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?"

Tebow, speaking recently at a function for boosters of the Florida Gators, took a swipe back at Quinn.

"I had a teammate at Denver who played the same position as me and he went to the University of Notre Dame. He would brag about his university, how great it was. Most of us in the locker room were like, 'C'mon, we all had opportunities. We chose not to go there.' ... But he talked so much about his university that it became easy. I'd say, 'Your whole team had one guy who ran under a 5.0 40 [yard dash]. Our kicker ran under 5.0.'"

Interestingly ? fine, somewhat interestingly ? GatorZone, the site where the quote originally appeared, has taken it down. Why it did so, it isn't saying, but it was a little out of character for Tebow, who usually just thanks Jesus and sticks to the tried and true media clichs.

If Tebow was indeed worried that the quote would get out, I wish he wouldn't be. It was a minor shot at Notre Dame at a college football function, and everyone in college football makes fun of Notre Dame. It's weird to not make fun of Notre Dame, especially in the face of someone like Brady Quinn, who for some reason still believes there's something special about Notre Dame.

Quinn and Tebow will just have to settle this on the field. In some year when the Jets and Chiefs play each other. And they've both improved to the point where they might actually play.

Wrestler Stephany Lee off Olympic team after positive drug test

Less than a month before the Olympics, wrestler Stephany Lee has been suspended for testing positive for a marijuana metabolite after the Olympic Trials. Ali Bernard, who took second to Lee at the Trials and placed fifth at the Olympics in 2008, is expected to replace her.

According to USA Wrestling, Lee accepted a one-year ban from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which tested Lee after she made the team in Iowa City in April. The suspension knocked her out of representing the U.S. at 72 kg (158.5 lbs.)

Though it gives Bernard a second chance to represent the U.S., it's a pretty dumb move for Lee. Athletes from every sport know they will be tested during their trials and that marijuana is a banned substance.

Lee has been wrestling she was a high schooler in Hawaii, and a part of the U.S. national team since 2003. She finally realized her dream of becoming an Olympian, and now it's gone.

Flames sign Dennis Wideman to 5-year, $26.25-million deal after trade with Capitals

WASHINGTON, DC ? Washington Capitals GM George McPhee didn't negotiate a new contract with unrestricted free agent defenseman Dennis Wideman.

"I didn't want to mislead a player. When it got right down to it, I didn't think we were going to be able to sign him," said McPhee, who cited economics and the emergence of young defensemen for the Capitals as factors.

So he told Wideman the Capitals would be moving on; and after Washington did a trade-and-sign deal with Tomas Vokoun and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Wideman and his agents decided they wanted to do the same thing, avoiding the open market of free agency on July 1.

On Wednesday, the Calgary Flames traded a fifth-round pick in 2013 and RFA defenseman Jordan Henry to the Capitals for Wideman, and then signed the puck-moving defenseman to a 5-year, $26.25-million contract. That's an average annual value of $5,250,000.

(UPDATE: Pat Steinberg of the FAN 960 in Calgary reports that Wideman's contract also includes a full no-movement clause. Wideman is now the 10th player on the Flames roster who has either a no-trade or no-movement clause in their contract.)

That sound you just heard was Jason Garrison and Ryan Suter popping champagne.

McPhee said the Flames reached out before the draft, and would have given up a fifth-round pick last weekend had they inked Wideman. Instead, they traded a fifth and the rights to Henry for the right to sign Wideman after the draft and before the free-agent frenzy.

Wideman had 11 goals along with a team high 35 assists for 46 points in 82 games. He filled Mike Green's role on the Capitals when Green was injured. He moves the puck well, but can be a liability in his own end. From Japers' Rink's end of season evaluation:

The Bad: As productive as he was offensively, there were times when Wideman appeared to be something of a liability in his own end... which is kind of the opposite of what you're going for at that position. His minus-8 rating was second-worst rating among Caps defensemen, a rating which at times reflected his poor - and sometimes downright head-scratching - decision-making with the puck. By the end of the season he had been on for 86 goals-against, second-most on the team behind only John Carlson, almost a third of the team's total goals-against for the season. At even strength, Wideman finished with the team's second-highest GAON/60 (and the highest in the playoffs).

Wideman turned into something of a scapegoat during the postseason - particularly in the first round - as he seemed destined to be on the ice whenever that big, heartbreaking goal was scored on the Caps. He finished the fourteen game run having been on for 13 goals-against, including eight in that catastrophic first series alone (when the team only gave up 15 total), and was a team-worst minus-7.

Does Wideman improve the Flames' blueline? Yes, based on the current personnel.

Will he frustrate the hell out of Calgary Flames with his occasional lapses? Yes.

Is he overpaid? Totally. But only based on what he was previously making and what the market dictates, maybe it makes a little sense. Maybe another coach cracks the code on Wideman, who was atrocious in the playoffs. Or maybe he'll be seen as a liability making too much coin. And lord knows salary never affects perception, right Jay Bouwmeester?

And five years of Dennis Wideman could lead to a therapist's couch. Good thing, as of now, there's not a no-trade clause listed for him.

Young Brandon Jacobs fan gets his $3.36 back, plus bounce house time with his hero

Remember the adorable little New York Giants fan named Joe who sent the contents of his piggy bank to Brandon Jacobs because "money" was the reason that Jacobs had to leave the Giants? The young fellow got his money back this week, hand-delivered by Jacobs, along with a signed Giants helmet and a bouncy, memorable afternoon with his favorite football player.

Jacobs told Matt Barrow of the Sacramento Bee that he and his son took Joe and his brother out to a bounce house for the afternoon and had a blast.

"It was just us in the whole place and we were just going room to room - just bouncing and flipping all over the place, hitting each other with balls, sweating, our shirts filthy. We were just dirty, stinky boys, you know?"

Added Joe's mom, Julie:

"He told me he really wanted to get out there with the kids. [...] He really wanted to enjoy it, and he did. It was amazing."

I love a story that ends with warm fuzzies all around. It was a sweet act by the child to send Jacobs his piggy bank money, and it was sweet of Jacobs to make sure the little guy knew that the gesture was appreciated. Jacobs is even pulling inspiration from the whole thing to get him motivated for the season.

"I'm at a point in my career when people have stopped believing in me and not believing that I can still play. But that's not the case. Joe believes in me, gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of want-to. And I'm ready to go. I can't wait until the season starts."

Well, if karma exists in that bounce house, Jacobs hopefully picked up enough Wednesday to improve on the 571 yards and 3.8 per carry he averaged last season. He won't get to do it in New York, like Joe wanted, but now maybe Joe can put his $3.36 towards the Sunday Ticket package and watch his hero in San Francisco.

Hey, Joe Sakic: What means more, Stanley Cup and gold medal or Hall of Fame?

Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame with one huge difference between his career and that of Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure and Adam Oates.

OK, make that two big differences: One from 1996 and the other from 2001.

The importance of winning a Stanley Cup is often a point of contention in Hall of Fame debates. Through the years, it may have elevated some candidates; but it's hard to determine if not owning a ring held back anyone, especially when three quarters of the Class of 2012 doesn't have their names on the Cup.

Sakic does, twice, which is part of his legend, having won the Conn Smythe in 1996. So during his call with the media on Tuesday, Sakic was asked the question:

Does he value his championships, including his Olympic gold medal, or his Hall of Fame selection more?

"There aren't many people in the Hockey Hall of Fame, so this is a tremendous honor. Obviously, it ranks right up there," he said.

"But as a kid, you're hoping [to win] championships."

Sakic continued: "You have a lot of breaks. I was very fortunate. You have to have great teams, and great players around you. We had some unbelievable players on our teams, and I feel very fortunate to have had that opportunity.

"That's what you play for. I think Mats said it earlier: When you retire, you have a lot more time to think about your career and what you've done. To get the call today was just an unbelievable honor. To have the committee select you as one of the guys to enter that Hockey Hall of Fame ? you're amazed that you're one of those guys."

OK, so he didn't really choose one or the other, which was expected. But Sakic spelled out his stance on the "Stanley Cup as Hall of Fame credential" fairly clearly: It takes a tremendous amount of good fortune to win a championship.

For example: When the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 1996. It was the year after they relocated from Quebec, the Nordiques having been a team clearly on the rise.

"It was an incredible move our first year winning the Stanley Cup. The year before in Quebec ? it was tough to move. We had such an exciting team, and were ready to take the next step," he recalled.

The move that put them over the top was, of course, the acquisition of Patrick Roy from the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 6, 1995. Sakic noted that as the kind of good fortune that a player needs to win a title.

"If we stayed in Quebec, I don't think we would have had Patrick Roy with us," he said.

Sakic will join Roy in the Hall of Fame this fall, sitting ninth in NHL history in points scored with 1,641. It's the culmination of a dream that began when Sakic was four years old, watching the Vancouver Canucks play the Atlanta Flames as a young lad in British Columbia.

"It's very proud. It's very humbling. To be placed in the Hall of Fame is a dream come true," said Sakic.

Tony Parker now says he ?almost lost [his] eye? in Drake-Chris Brown brawl, Spurs ?very worried?

Just two days after filing a $20 million lawsuit against the owners of the New York City nightclub where he was hurt in an ugly June 14 brawl between the entourages of musicians Drake and Chris Brown, San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker revealed that the extent of the left-eye injury he sustained is much, much worse than he originally thought, could be serious enough to keep him from representing France in next month's 2012 London Olympics, and has the Spurs "very worried" about his future.

In his Paris press conference following his injury, Parker said he was at Manhattan nightclub W.i.P. with friends when a bottle-chucking melee broke out, reportedly over the two singers' respective relationships with fellow R&B star Rihanna. Like many other club-goers who suffered injury, Parker said he got caught in the crossfire, with shards of glass from a broken bottle entering his left eye and scratching his cornea. At that time, Parker said doctors had told him he couldn't "do anything for seven days," but that he was "lucky [because the] injury won't prevent me from competing the Olympics in any way."

[Video: Who will get picked after Anthony Davis in the NBA draft?]

When news broke Friday that Parker is suing W.i.P.'s owners for $20 million, however, I wondered if that huge price tag suggested Parker didn't walk away as unscathed as he'd previously represented. Now, according to a (possibly not 100 percent accurate) translation of a French interview posted Sunday on Parker's official website, we know that speculation was warranted ? the Spurs point guard said subsequent tests revealed that a piece of glass "had penetrated 99 percent of [his] left eye," and that doctors told him he "almost lost his eye." As a result, his status for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics is now in doubt.

A translation of the interview follows the jump:

Tony, how's your eye a week after your return to France? It seems there are some complications ...

It's true, it's not going as I had imagined. When I gave my press conference last Friday after passing through the emergency department after getting off the plane, I did not think it would be so serious. I had additional tests on Friday afternoon and [they] found a piece of glass that had penetrated 99 percent of my left eye. I can say today, I almost lost my eye. So I had surgery on Sunday morning under general anesthesia. That's why I stayed in Paris instead of joining the team of France in Pau on June 20 as I had announced.

Withdrawal from the London Olympics ? is it possible?

At the request of the Spurs, I return to the United States on July 5. I'm not allowed to travel on a long-haul aircraft before that date. I will see a specialist in New York with the hope of getting the consent to compete in the Olympics. The Spurs are very worried. Depending on the results [of that specialist's examination], a withdrawal is possible. The decision is no longer mine; it is in the hands of the doctor and San Antonio.

Does it feel like you're in a bad movie?

I can't believe it. I just spent eight days locked in my hotel. I was not allowed out, to prevent an infection. I was so afraid that I have not left my room. I have asked myself many questions. I cannot believe that happened to me a month before the Games, when it's been two years since I have had anything with the Spurs or the France team. [NOTE: Parker hasn't missed significant time since April 2010, when a broken hand kept him out of 16 San Antonio games.] Every couple of hours, I have to put five different products in my eye. In any case I thank the doctor who followed me for saving my eye.

What's the predominant feeling when you are told you need the operation?

Fear sets in. It is so fragile, an eye ... I couldn't believe it at the time. I could not believe it. But that's life; I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have not had any luck, but in my misfortune, I'm doing fine. It could have been worse. The rest of my career is not in question. I just have to wait until the lesion resolves.

Will you still join the French team today?

I arrive tonight in Pau. Even though I'm not allowed to train, I want to be with the group. No pun intended, it is important in my eyes to spend time with the guys. It will take until July 5 to get the green light from the American doctor and get back on the floor. So in the best case, I'll drive to make my return to France on July 7. That means I will have to forfeit the first four [Olympic tune-up] games ? June 27 at Pau against Italy, June 28 in Boulazac against Italy, June 29 in Toulouse against the Ivory Coast and July 7 in Orleans against England. So that will leave me just three weeks to prepare for the first game [of the Olympics] on July 29 against the United States. And to avoid any new problems, I will see on the floors with protective goggles.

This is potentially devastating news for the French national team; as my Yahoo! Sports colleague Maggie Hendricks noted earlier Monday at the Y! Olympics blog, Fourth-Place Medal, Parker is "a key part of the French team that qualified for the Games for the first time since it won silver in 2000," and without him running the point "France's medal chances are severely affected."

Looking beyond this summer, though, the extent of Parker's injury ? once thought to be merely a scratch that would sideline him for a week ? is obviously a very worrisome revelation for a San Antonio squad that is set to pay the point man $37.5 million to run the show for the next three years. That stretch could prove to be an especially pivotal one for the Spurs, who will likely soon have to face life without Hall of Famers Tim Duncan (36 years old, 1,301 NBA games and nearly 47,000 big-league minutes on his body) and Manu Ginobili (one month shy of age 35, bearing the wear of 17 years of professional ball).

If Parker's viability moving forward is at all compromised by this injury ? and, especially, if it were to be compromised by returning to the court too soon, goggles or no goggles, national pride aside ? then the one foundational piece on which general manager R.C. Buford and coach Gregg Popovich thought they could rely as the next rebuilding effort launches would be much more difficult to bank on. From that perpective, San Antonio wanting its medical staff and front office to be able to make the decision on Parker's participation in London makes all the sense in the world, even if the end result of their investment protection winds up severely hampering France's chances of medaling.

The next big date in Parker's attempt to get back on the floor, and the Spurs' efforts to protect their player, would seem to be July 5, when (if cleared to fly) he will return to the U.S. for that specialist check-in. Until then, basketball fans in Toulouse and Texas alike will be holding their breath and crossing their fingers.
